Unhappiness is huge sign of a lack of personal responsibility.
It’s a hard pill to swallow. I know, because I’ve been there.
Through our thoughts and attitudes, we distill out of the ingredients of life either; Happiness or Unhappiness.
Anyone who desires it, who wills it, and who learns and applies the right formula – can become a happy and highly-fulfilled person.
If you’re currently feeling unhappy, annoyed, irritated, or even feeling depressed, you likely fall victim to the following:
- Neglecting your own basic needs
- Struggling to take personal responsibility
- Prefer to play the victim role
- Engage in addictive behavior
- Have difficulty setting and achieving goals
- Do not intentionally pursue happiness
- Choose to stay in a state of pity
- Identify yourself with emotional struggle
- You let others down, as well as yourself.
- Can’t seem to get ahead or find fulfillment.
- You often feel overwhelmed by external circumstances
- Feels like life is crowded with unsolvable problems.
- Not willing to take ownership of current obstacles.
If you identify with any of this, it can be a hard pill to swallow.
But the major reason why most of us believe that it is impossible to be happy under extremely negative circumstances, is because that line of thinking is a reflection of who we are currently.
Right now, you might believe that events outside of your control drive your actions and your outcomes. This is called an external locus of control.
What you need, however, is an internal locus:
Which is that you believe you have control over what happens, that you dictate your own outcomes in life, and that you have agency over yourself.
(Learn more about this in Viktor Frankl’s book, one of my favorites – A Man’s Search for Meaning)
So from here forward, I want you to promise that you will no longer say any of the following ever again:
I don’t feel like it.
I’ll do it tomorrow.
I dont have the energy.
I dont have the time.
I dont have the money.
Its too difficult.
I dont feel good.
It’s not my fault.
I’ve been there before, and have experienced massive unhappiness and a deep depression that lasted almost 2 years.
I know it can be hard to snap yourself out of it, but you deserve to be able to move on.
If you want to copy what I did, here’s what I recommend:
First: Acknowledge where you are currently and what your weaknesses are
Then: Map out your perfect day and your perfect week all built around your strengths
Next: Create a challenge for yourself with something at stake (I recommend 60 days)
Finally: Pursue the challenge relentlessly and stay consistent for as long as you can
This challenge is also part of the group cohort I host every quarter called Project Resurgence, which you can learn more about here.
The goal is to make this a lifelong journey, not just a short challenge.
You have control over your life, and if you force yourself to take responsibility, you’ll be in a much better place, and you’ll thank yourself for pushing through.

It’s easy to procrastinate, feel down on yourself, and feel stuck.
But that’s just simply not an option.
Instead, find a way to thrive under pressure.
Build up your own skills, adversity, and emotional intelligence.
If you can remain calm and make high-stakes decisions when under pressure, you can get through anything.
It’s why I feel obligated to share my journey.
